How to convert files to PDF in Batch with Google Docs

If you have a huge bundle of Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets and PowerPoint Presentations on your hard drive that you would like to convert into PDF at once without investing in commercial software like Adobe Acrobat, try Google Docs.

While it has always been possible to convert Office documents into PDF using Google Docs, the new export feature makes it even easier for you to batch convert Microsoft Office and Open Office file formats into PDF (or HTML) in three easy steps.

Batch Conversion to PDF with Google Docs

Step #1 - Create a new "input" folder in Google Docs where you'll upload all your documents and presentations that are to converted into PDF.

             pdf input queue

Step #2 - Now select the Upload Document option in Google Docs, set the destination folder to the one that you created in Step #1 and upload*# all your documents.
Google Docs officially supports the following file formats though you may also upload images:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps).
  • Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), OpenDocument (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw).
  • Microsoft Excel (csv, .xls, .xlsx) files and OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods).
             pdf upload documents

*# You may also use the email option to upload documents onto Google Docs but that would put everything on the main folder and managing documents can therefore become a issue especially when you have too many files.

Step #3 -  Once all files are uploaded onto Google Docs, open the dashboard again and select the "input" folder from the right sidebar. Select all the files in this folder and choose "Export" under "More Options".

Here's select "PDF" (or HTML) as the output format and all your Word Documents, presentations, spreadsheets, etc. will be instantly converted into PDF.

             batch pdf convert

And if you are converting a large batch of documents into PDF, you don't have to wait in the browser for the conversion to finish as Google Docs will automatically send you an email once the processing is over. The email will have a link from where you can directly download all the PDF files in one large ZIP.

Add adsense at top of only post pages in blogger

Adding Adsense ads to the top of only posts pages in Blogger (as seen above) and not on any other page (home page , archives etc.) is bit difficult keeping in view the limitations of the Blogger (blogspot) blog. According to Adsense policies one can only have the three ad units and three link units simultaneously at any webpage. If you add the Adsense code to top of each post then at home page if you are having, lets say, five posts then Adsense cannot be shown at top of each post.

Also it’s better to have clean home page with recent posts and their summaries and ads only show on top of post at post page. A little trick can solve this issue. Thanks to Page type in Blogger. The posts have the pageType= item. Just follow the steps given below to add the Adsense to top of each post of Blogger and at the same time the ads will not be shown on home page etc.

1. get the Google Adsense ad codes from your Adsense accounts and parsed them so that it can be used in Blogger template. You can use this tool.

2. Go to Blogger account and then go to Design > Edit HTML.( Backup your template as precautionary measure)

3. Check the Expand Widget Templates box and search the following line of code in your template by pressing CTRL + F

<div class='post-body entry-content'>

4. Rite After this add the following lines of code. Replace the line (YOUR ADSENSE AD CODE) with parsed Adsense code in step 1.

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<div style='float: top;'>
YOUR PARSED ADSENSE AD CODE
</div>
</b:if>

5. Save the template and you are done.

You can define the float property to define the Ads placement. With top property Adsense ads will be shown at top of each post just below the title of post. If you want to merge the Adsense ads at the top left of right of the post just write left or right instead of top.
Most people recommend to have the 300×250 or 336×280 ad unit at the top of the post as its gives better results specially for the visitors who landed one your post via search engines.

How to automatically download videos from the Websites

Streaming video is one of the great perks of 21st-century living (so far), but sometimes we want to store copies of the videos we watch for later viewing, sharing, or other purposes.

It's possible to do so through most browsers, but it can be a pain. VSO Downloader is a standalone program that monitors your viewing and automatically saves a copy of any video you watch to your hard drive. Here's how to use it:

Step 1. Download and install VSO Downloader.

Step 2. Launch VSO Downloader before you start watching videos, and minimize it to the system tray, if you'd like.

Step 3. When you start watching a new video clip, the program will automatically detect it and start to download. It works with thousands of sites and all the major browsers, but you may find that some videos remain undetected.

Step 4: Automatically download detected videos.

Step 5. If you'd rather pick which videos are downloaded, click "Options," then "Settings," then select "Download settings." Uncheck the box next to "Download automatically detected media." From now on, you'll need to instruct VSO Downloader which videos to download. You can also change the folder to which video save.

Step 6: Change download settings.
If you're feeling adventurous, you may want to tinker with the more-advanced download and detection settings, but I found the defaults to work fine.

Key Features of VSO Downloader

Download Streaming

  • Download Audio and Video Streaming quickly and easily
  • Streaming content is detected and downloaded automatically
  • No copy/pasting URLs necessary
  • Download HD video streaming by selecting HD resolution on your web page
  • Capture streaming and replay videos at any moment

Download YouTube to MP3

  • MP3 converter integrated
  • Download videos in MP3 audio format from any site: MySpace, Dailymotion, YouTube + more
  • Convert video files to MP3 automatically after download is complete.

Perfect Ways to Improve Your Blog to Next Level

What does it take to move your blog up to the next level? Obviously you need a regular supply of useful content to attract readers and keep your audience happy, but here are a few extra tips on increasing interest in your blog in 2012.
1. Stop Auto-Posting
It is important that your blog has a Facebook page, a Twitter account and a Google Plus page, but unless you publish a dozen stories a day, avoid auto-posting to these channels. There are several tools that can update your Facebook page or send a tweet the moment you publish a new story, but the audience engagement level will be much higher, especially on Facebook, if you craft these messages manually instead of resorting to the help of a bot.
Lifehacker, for instance, is a pretty busy site, but it doesn’t employ bots to populate itsFacebook page – every single share or status update is written by one of the site’s editors, which helps push up engagement levels.
2. Use Fewer Ads
Revenue from online advertising is the lifeline of most small blogs, but try maintaining a balance here because too many ads are likely to repel visitors. The organic traffic originating from search engines is always welcome but the goal should be to convert that casual visitor into a return visitor, so you therefore need to offer a good reading experience on every page of your blog. Also, avoid using video ads that auto-play as they might embarrass people who are visiting your blog from an office computer.
GigaOm, The Verge and the WSJ’s AllThingsD are good examples of blogs that mix great design and non-intrusive advertising.
3. Master Google Custom Search
Internal search logs (what users type in your site’s search box) are a good indicator of topics that people are looking for on your site. The search box on your site is probably powered by Google Custom Search, but look beyond the default options and consider adding Promotions, Refinements and Synonyms to provide even more accurate and relevant search results. Google Custom Search also provides Auto-completions so your readers can type queries faster by using fewer characters.
The Custom Search Blog discusses each of these features in detail.
4. Minimize the Panda Impact
Google made some important changes to its search algorithms last year to keep “content farms” out of the search results pages, and that change had a big impact on small blogs as well. While the basic rules of SEO haven’t changed (see the SEO Handbook written by Google), here are a few things that may help improve your website’s  ranking in 2012.
a.     Remove pages with thin content because they could negatively affect your entire site.
b.     If you accept user-generated content on your site (like an online forum), move it to a separate sub-domain.
c.      Use larger images in your blog posts as the size of images is now a ranking signal in Image Search.
d.     Check your Google Analytics reports to discover pages that have a high bounce rate and analyze why people aren’t finding them useful. Search engines like pages that search users find useful, so it is important to fix pages that have a high bounce rate.
e.      Work on improving the loading time of your site because people don’t want to wait on the web. Page load time is also a factor in search rankings.
f.     Enable Social Tracking in Google Analytics to learn what content of yours is popular on social networks. While this is not officially confirmed, some search experts say Google could be using social sharing signals in search rankings.
5. Explore Additional Mediums
RSS feeds and email newsletters are the two most popular ways to distribute a blog, but now is a good time to explore other avenues as well. That’s because the use of RSS readers has declined in recent years and most people don’t want to subscribe to another mailing list just to follow a blog. Here are few things you could experiment with:
a.     Create mobile apps for your blog. Anyone with decent knowledge of programming can create blog apps using free tools like PhoneGap and jQuery Mobile.
b.     Distribute some of your long-form content as an eBook that people can download and print or read offline. Web18’s FirstPost.com offers a free eBook of their popular posts every week.
c.      In addition to having a fan page for your blog on Facebook, also open your personal profile to subscribers because the engagement levels are much higher for content shared on a Facebook profile page than on a fan page.
d.     Create browser extensions for your blog as some of your regular readers may visit more often if you offer them easy access tools.
e.      Publish an OpenSearch plugin as that will help people search your blog from within their browser search boxes. OpenSearch is a simple text file (here’s an example) that you can even create inside Notepad.
f.       Launch a video channel and apply to become a YouTube partner. YouTube is the second-largest search engine after Google, so you’d be missing out on a large audience if you don’t put videos on YouTube.
g.     Use additional distribution channels like Slideshare, Tumblr, Flickr and Scribd to expand the reach of your blog. You can publish original pictures, documents and slides to these channels and, in the long run, these shares will indirectly help in the growth of your blog.

Window 7 Sticky Notes - Features & Effective Uses

Windows 7 is one of the best products that came out from Microsoft. Along with it, came a very handy application called “Sticky Notes”.

Sticky Notes Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: Use Sticky Notes Effectively
Sticky Notes is a very handy and useful application for almost all kind of users. It allow you to take notes quickly and easily without getting into the trouble of creating a file and then saving it. Sticky Notes require just one click to start and it is auto-safe enabled which means every thing you write of paste in it is saved instantly even if you close the application, your notes are safe.

Moreover, it serves the purpose of a reminder application where the things you wrote are in front of you always and remind you of any actions you have planned.  You can color them to distinguish between any two set of tasks and so on.

But nothing is perfect. Sticky Notes application is very easy to use but it does not allow you to change the font-style. It uses Segoe Print as default font. Though Segoe Print is a pretty neat font at first, eventually one gets tired of it and would like to change it. Moreover, there are lack of visual controls on sticky note to format text (probably dropped in favor of keeping it simple).

How to Change Font Style

There are two things you can do to change the font-style of your Stick Note from Segoe Print to any other Font you like.
  1. You can copy the text into a notepad window and change the font there to whatever you like and then copy the text back into the note and the font will stick.
  2. Registry Tweak:
    1. Press Start and Type “REGEDIT” then press Enter
    2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
    3. Export that key so you have a backup (Optional)
    4. Find Segoe Print (TrueType)
    5. Change the value to the file name of any other font that you wish to use that is already installed (navigate that registry key to find others).
    6. Restart the computer.
This will change the font-settings of Segoe Print to another font and where ever Segoe Print is being use, your newly selected font shall be used.

How to Format Text

Increase Your Disk Space of Window 7 PC

Disk Clean up

The most important and easiest way to free disk space is to use a built-in tool of Windows 7 called the Disk Cleanup. It cleans up your disk by deleting temporary files that are piled up over a period of time. These files include:
  • Temporary Internet files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Downloaded Program files
  • Windows temporary files
You can start Disk Cleanup, by doing the following:
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space

Remove Unwanted Programs

Over the period of time one has to install different programs for different needs. If there are some programs installed on your machine that are not required any more, it is recommended that you un-install those programs to save disk space. Below is the method to un-install unused programs:
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  2. Type “Uninstall a Program
  3. Hit Enter
  4. Now select the program you want to un-install and hit Uninstall

Remove Unwanted Windows Features

Your Windows 7 OS is a complete package containing more solutions than you have problems. It has a bundle of built-in programs that you might not want to use. It is better to un-install those programs to save disk space. To do so, do the following:
  1. Click Startwindows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space

Again, I should remind you that this is not a recommended step. Only do it if you are in dire need of disk space.

Disable System Restore

Its better to disable system restore on drives other than C: drive. It will not have an effect on the size of C drive but you can find space in Drives other than C:. If you are in dire need of space in C drive too, then disable System Restore on All Drives. To do so:
  1. Right Click Computer Icon on Desktop or Start Menu

Disable Hibernate

This is my favorite way of freeing disk space. Hibernate is a windows feature that allows you to save your pc state before you shut down your computer. Hibernate is a good feature and is very helpful but unfortunately it takes 2-8 GB of precious disk space. There are cases when you don’t need this feature so it is recommended that you disable hibernate. To disable hibernate do the following:
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  2. Type “cmd” (without quotes)

You can get your wasted space back.

Remove All But The Most Recent Restore Point

Windows 7 keeps a record of Restore Points in the disk in case of emergency to retrieve your settings and data back. These restore points are created at particular time intervals as well as when you install some software such as device drivers.
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  2. Type “Disk Cleanup” (without quotes)windows 7 disk cleanup launch 380x118 Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space

  6. more options tab Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
    Add caption
  7. Click on “More Options” tab.
  8. In the “System Restore and Shadow Copies” section, click on “Clean up..” button.Windows 7 system restore and shadow copies Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  9. Click on “Delete” button.
  10. Click “OK”.
  11. Windows will now ask for confirmation to delete files. Click “Delete Files”.windows 7 delete files Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
You are done. Now only the latest restore point will be saved in your PC. All the old System Restore points will be deleted.

Delete %TEMP% Files

Although Disk Clean up is suppose to clean up TEMP folder, sometimes it just doesn’t work. To overcome this, you can delete these files yourself. The method is easy, just do the following
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  2. Type %TEMP%
  3. Hit Enter
  4. A folder will appear, select all files by pressing CTRL + A
  5. Now Hit the delete button. All the temp files will be deleted.
  6. To ignore Recycle Bin press SHIFT + DEL
You might get a warning that a file cannot be deleted. It is because some programs are using those file. You should simply ignore those file and continue with the deletion.

NTFS Compression

The NTFS file compression option can compress files on your hard disk. This allows you to get more space on the disk. This is an effective option and can save a lot of disk space. To do so, just do the following:
  1. Just right click a folder, hit Properties
  2. Click the Advanced Button
  3. Select Compress <pic>
  4. Click OK

Cookies and Caches

Normally, the websites you visit keep some data on your  hard disk in form of Cookies. Cookies increase the website performance but in most cases these are useless and should be deleted to avoid becoming a victim of some hacker. Similarly, Caches are also maintained by web browsers to increase website performance. You can get rid of both of these to get some disk space back. To do so:
  1. Click Start windows 7 start menu icon Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: 10 killer ways to Increase Disk Space
  2. Type “inetcpl.cpl” (without quotes) in the Start Search box
  3. Press ENTER
  4. On the General tab, click Delete under Browsing History in the Internet Properties dialog box.
  5. In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, un-check all check boxes and check only Cookies
  6. Click Delete
That’s it for today, hope you like it. If you want more, keep coming. Do let us know about these tips and how did they work out for you. Your comments are most appreciated.

Write How To's Articles to Earn some Revenue

There are couple of ways by which you can make money on the web by writing how-to tips, useful advice and even opinions.

For instance, you can setup your own website and  add advertisements next to your content – that’s how most blogs (including this one) sustain themselves. The other option is freelancing – you can join an established site in your niche as a writer and they’ll pay you a monthly salary or sometimes a share in the advertising revenue itself.

Then you have a bunch of popular sites like eHow, Hubpages, Squidoo, Associated Content, Examiner and even Google Knol that work on a similar model - you can write content on almost any topic and get paid on a revenue share basis.  A big advantage with writing on such sites is that you only need to focus on creating great content and rest everything - including the article’s layout, SEO, hosting, etc. - is taken care of by the service.

Videojug, one of the most popular how-to websites on the web known for high-quality , is also getting into the game of "user generated content" with the launch of Videojug Pages – it’s a place where anyone can write how-to articles on their favorite topics and get paid per impression.

The system works something like this. You write an how-to article on Videojug Pages using their Tumblr-style online editor and publish it to the web. Videojug will add ads on the page from Google (using your AdSense ID), eBay (using your affiliate ID) as well as their own display ads. You’ll get 100% of the revenue generated from AdSense and eBay while the revenue from display ads will be split 50:50. Not bad!

Create How-To Articles Tumblr Like Web Editor Pull Twitter Feeds

There’s one very interesting feature that I think is unique to the Videojug service – you can have multiple people contribute to your how-to article and split advertising revenue among them directly inside Videojug. Each article has 100 points, you can hand out some of these points to the various contributors based on the contributions and therefore their percentage revenue share becomes the same as the number of points they own.

The kind of money that you can make by writing articles on these sites may not be enough for you to even consider quitting your day job but if your writings invite decent number of eyeballs, you can probably pay some of your utility bills from the online earnings.
