10 Futuristic Technology to Debut Soon

A number of technological innovations that we only saw in comics and sci-fi novels have come to see reality in the past decade. But if you wonder whether anything could be done to make the present more futuristic, this collection is one that you will have to see to believe.

Here are some of the most futuristic products, according to Mashable, that are in development right now, and could be hitting markets as early as this year.

1. The Invisible Car:
Mercedes Benz designed a car that was “invisible” to the environment (i.e. had zero emissions) and had an astoundingly low impact on the environment. To promote the concept of its invisibility, the company actually made the car invisible. Mercedes says the car is good enough to see the production of its series, but it is expected to only be made available to markets in 2014, according to Mashable’s report.

2. A Space Elevator: Japan aims to build an elevator to space; one that will reach out to a space station 22,000 miles above the earth by the year 2050. The space elevator will contain living quarters and other tourist attractions on board, and will travel from the ground spaceport to the space station at 125 kmph, according to the report. The elevator’s passenger car will be capable of carrying 30 passengers who will reach the space station 8 days later.

3. Driverless Cars: Google received the patent for this technology last year and is expected to use it in cars in the near future. Currently, the technology is being tested at Nevada in the US. The car, on a test, was claimed to be “like cruise control on steroids,” by Tom Jacobs, chief public information officer at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

4. Robotic Assistants: Robotic assistants have helped improve lives, from helping paralyzed patients walk, to picking up tools and assembling heavy machinery. Now although the main paradigm behind robotic sciences is that knowledge of how to program robots is limited to computer scientists and experts in robotic sciences, but a study by the Georgia Institute of Technology in the States predicts that every home will have a robotic assistant to help with everyday tasks, especially since scientists are working on new learning algorithms for machines that could be based on everyday language.

5. Flying Cars are here: Flying cars used to be a part of spoofs in sci-fi movies, especially because of the size of the notion, but Terrafugia, a company aimed at providing innovative solutions to solve challenges facing personal aviation. The car will be available at the 2012 New York auto show for its pre-sale curtain-raiser.

6. Lab-grown meat: Dutch scientists are looking into the possibility of generating lab-grown meat that will be cultured from stem-cells of animal-muscle-tissue. They say it will increase efficiency by 35 percent since the inch-long strips of meat can mashed together to form a fillet, or a patty. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) hopes to generate the same result with chicken by the end of June this year.

7. A Moon Base: Space agencies are planning to build a permanent base with regard to the moon by establishing a station on its surface, or launching a station to orbit it. They hope to further explore life on the moon by doing so.

 8. Mind-reading technology: IBM’s last 5 in 5 prediction revealed the possibility of developing mind-reading technologies, but the blue giant is working towards the development of a computer that responds to signals from your brain. The person controlling the device wears a headset that detects and transmits your thoughts and 7. sends them to a computer which instructs the machine about what to do. The computer will also be able to read patterns in your thoughts so the machine can learn and adapt to your thoughts specifically.

9. Flying Drones: US President Barack Obama is reported to have already signed legislation that allows the Federal Aviation Administration to allow US police agencies to use remotely controlled drones in a few months. The drones could be especially helpful for surveillance, but drone makers are also currently researching the use of nonlethal weapons such as tear gas, and stun guns which could be fired from the aerial drones.

10. Wireless Electricity: Companies are researching the possibilities to make wireless charging of cellphones a thing of the present, with wireless electricity. Other devices, according to Mashable are expected to follow the trend, so one can expect wireless electricity like Tesla’s demonstration to shock devices and people watching.

How to Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your Life

Everyone's capable of being a jerk now and then, but a select few seem to have adopted the behavior as a lifelong career. Perhaps its an undermining coworker, a jealous friend, or a controlling boss that's the source of your frequent emotional abuse. Regardless of the situation, it's time to put a stop to it now. Here's what to do.

A few personal experiences of my own have taught me a fair amount about dealing with abusive people, but I'm not a professional. Roger S. Gil, on the other hand, is a marriage and family therapist who has plenty to say about getting out of an abusive situation. I spoke with him to learn about the telltale signs of manipulation and abuse and how to fight back when you find yourself a victim. With Roger's help, we're going to take a look at how you can easily detect the signs of emotional warfare and how to deal with the problem so that you can live a happier and healthier life.

How to Detect the Signs of Emotional Warfare

How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your Life
While it's easy to recognize when we're in a problematic situation, we're often reluctant to label it as (emotional) abuse. That's a strong word, and so we generally justify the behavior as just a negative personality trait or two. In this section we're going to look at a few common traits and strategies that are common with emotionally abusive people.

They Exploit Your Sympathies

If you ever want someone to do something for you, it's very simple: make them feel like you desperately need their help. Master manipulators will play on your sympathies because they know it's one of the simplest ways to get what they want. Even if you know you're being manipulated, it's very hard to turn someone away who appears desperate. If they've successfully deceived you in the past by exploiting your good nature, you know what kind of person you're dealing with. Don't let this behavior continue.

They Conceal Evil in Altruism

The difference between good and evil is often intention. When an abusive person does something bad, it's easy to spin that bad thing into a positive by trying to convince you they did it for a good reason. Perhaps a coworker took credit for one of your ideas but claimed to cover for you because your boss thought it was stupid. In reality they likely just stole the idea for their own benefit, but when conveying the outcome to you it sounds like they took a bullet on your behalf. You'll have a hard time proving what really happened because if they're telling the truth you'll end up looking bad and if they're lying you'll look petty to your boss. Either way you lose and you can't know either way. You can feel when someone is really watching out for you. When you have doubts, it's likely manipulation. Watch out for concealed altruism. It plays on your doubts and puts you in a stalemate. If you encounter this behavior, aim to put a stop to it immediately.

They Play On Your Guilt

How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your LifeGuilt is an awful sort of thing that punishes good people and ignores the bad. We feel guilt because we don't want to hurt others. People who don't care—the type that will conduct emotional warfare—know you feel this way and will exploit it for their own gain. For example, they may ask you to take care of something for them. Perhaps you have plans one night but they claim to have an emergency and need you to come over/help them with work/babysit/whatever nonetheless. They'll beg and plead and try to convince you how awful things will be if you don't help them, all the while ignoring the impact it will have on you. If this happens, remind them of that impact and do not help them if they're the type to never return the favor.

They Charm You When You're Upset

How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your LifeFew people are going to let themselves be manipulated by a dull, boring individual. Most abusive people are able to do what they do because they're charming. If you confront their behavior or argue with them, they'll pull out that charm to make you feel important and loved. This is a kind of misdirection that will stop you from thinking too much about why you're mad and remembering all the things you like about them. By the time you're done talking, you'll have a smile on your face and the problem won't have been discussed at all. If this happens, you were being manipulated.

How to Deal with an Abusive Person In Your Life

If those common signs sound like someone you know, it's time to confront the situation head-on. First, you have to figure out what to do. Here are the steps you need to take.

Recognize That the Problem is Them, Not You

How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your LifeFirst things first: you need to accept that there's a problem. We often make excuses for the abusive people in our lives because they're not just abusive—they have good qualities, too. The bad stuff is hard to quantify and so it's easier to try and shove it under the rug. Roger suggests that we recognize that it isn't just a problem for us, but a serious issue for the abusive person as well:
Manipulation, exploitation, and other worthy-of-a-soap-opera-character behaviors are often indicators of the kinds of traits that make up a personality disorder diagnosis. (Note: not all people who exploit, manipulate, or demean have a personality disorder.) Barring
any type of equally-maladaptive behavior on your part that might have provoked said person's "wrath", being the target of these types of behaviors probably means that the "mean person" likely has more issues than Sports Illustrated.
Generally, this means your sympathies are misplaced. Often times a manipulative individual will play on your sympathies—as we previous discussed—and you'll feel bad for them because of one of many specific hardships that seem to turn up like clockwork. Instead, have compassion for the likelihood that they're very troubled individuals. You may find that your relationship with this person needs to be severed, but that doesn't mean there must be hate between you. Understanding that it 1) isn't your fault and 2) they're dealing with serious problems of their own helps provide much-needed context to this rough situation.

Assess Your Relationship with the Person and Weigh the Outcome of Addressing the Issue

Some people are worse than others, and sometimes you come across abusive people in situations that are particularly difficult to get out of. Before you go and sever your relationship with an individual or resign yourself to misery you need to assess the damage your actions may cause. Roger elaborates:
How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your Life
If your boss is the one manipulating you, exploiting you, etc., then you may have to weigh the pros and cons of taking matters into your own hands (although I'm always one to advise people to put an end to these behaviors by any means necessary). When you address the issue in these types of relationships, you run the risk of provoking more harm to yourself because the person has power over you. If you can't tolerate the treatment, however, then you may have to bite the bullet and do something. If it's someone with whom you have a social relationship (e.g. family or friend), then you can probably be a little more assertive. Nonetheless, you still need to exercise caution because anyone with the power to cause you emotional harm can probably make your life somewhat difficult. Proceed with caution, but if the person is causing a great amount of distress you will need to address the situation head-on.
Basically, consider the angles before you move forward. If there's a problem, deal with it, but think about what you're going to say and do before you make your approach. A fallout may be inevitable, but you can often mitigate the damage by simply being prepared.

Be Direct and Consistent in Your Confrontation

When you accuse an emotionally abusive individual of wrongdoing, it's rare that they'll readily admit that you're right. If you've been holding off on this confrontation, chances are you're going to go into the conversation a little nervous. As a result, it might become pretty easy to derail you. Roger suggests that you need to be as clear as possible and be consistent with what you're saying:
How to Combat Emotional Warfare and Root Out the Manipulative, Abusive People in Your Life
I find it helpful to clearly identify what specific behaviors the person is doing that are bothering me and letting them know how they make me feel. Then I follow it up with a demand to change the behaviors. Example: "The fact that you always ring my doorbell at breakfast time makes me feel like you're only using me for my bacon. I would appreciate it if you came over after breakfast or come over with your own bacon." This may sound a little fake, but it keeps charged emotions to a minimum and keeps you from stooping down to their level. Also, be aware that some people's "reality distortion field" (therapists like to call them "cognitive distortions") may lead the person being addressed to deny that anything is amiss. Example: "What are you talking about, I come over to see you. It just so happens that you're always making bacon when I come over." As a result, it's vital that you 1) stick to your guns, 2) keep your cool, and 3) keep the discussion moving.
Chances are that you've thought about the problem at hand and the resolution you'd like, so don't let yourself be deterred by a manipulative argument. This isn't an everyday conversation—you're providing an ultimatum in a calm, cool, and collected manner. The recipient of this ultimatum may try to make you feel guilty for your actions, or just that they're compeltely unwarranted, but remember that you're having this conversation because of that kind of behavior. If you stay on your message and keep a level head, you should be able to make it clear that the unwanted behavior will not be tolerated going forward.

If you've decided you need to sever a relationship it's generally best to be brief and not leave much room for discussion. Doing so just opens up the possibility for argument and further abuse. It's hard to reduce a long relationship with another human being—even a bad one—to a brief moment, but ultimately it's better than falling into an emotional battle that will leave you feeling far more hurt.

Host your Website on Google Free

In what looks like a brilliant PR win for Google, the Royal Family of UK has selected Google as the web hosting provider for Prince William’s official wedding website. The site, available at officialroyalwedding2011.org, contains news updates, photo galleries and videos and all this is hosted on Google App Engine.

What’s new here? Web developers have long used Google App Engine to host web apps in the cloud – see Sleeping Time and Tall Tweets for example – but this is probably the first time that Google’s infrastructure is being used to host a ‘static website’ of an event that will get plenty of press attention and web traffic in the coming days.

website hosted on googleHost your own website on Google App Engine

There are quite a few advantages with hosting websites on Google App Engine. First, it should be more reliable since your site will get served through Google’s own data centers.
Second, if you have a low traffic website, it is highly likely that you won’t have to spend a penny for web hosting. You get 1 GB of free storage space for hosting your images, HTML web pages and other files and 1 GB of bandwidth per day. If you exceed that quota, you pay-per-use similar to Amazon S3.
Ready to jump?

With a regular web hosting company, you rend some storage space on their server, you then transfer your HTML and other files to that server using FTP or cPanel and your website is ready to serve. Google App Engine works in similar manner except that the file transfer mechanism is a bit different.

Step 1: Go to appengine.google.com and create a new application. If you have never used App Engine before, you might be asked to verify your mobile phone number before you can create a new app.

Step 2: Give your application a name – it should be unique and may only include lowercase alphabets and digits. For this example, our app identifier is “thisismyawesomewebsite”.

Step 3: The next two sub-steps may scare some of you but trust me, they simply require you download and run two installers in the given sequence.
3a. Download and install Python from python.org.
3b. Download and install App Engine SDK from this code.google.com.

Step 4: Download and unzip this file – website.zip – somewhere on your desktop. It contains a basic website with some HTML pages, images and CSS that we’ll try to host with Google App Engine.

Step 5: Open the app.yaml file with notepad and replace the word ‘labnol’ with the application identifier that you created in Step 2 above. Save the changes.

Step 6: Finally it’s time to deploy /upload our website to Google App Engine. Open the Google App Engine Launcher program from the Start Menu, choose File –> Add Existing Application and browse to the folder where you unzipped the website.
Hit the deploy button, input your Google Account credentials and within seconds, your website should become available online at abc.appspot.com where abc is your unique app identifier. Later, if you add or modify any web page, press Deploy again and your new /edited files will get uploaded to App Engine.

Microsoft's Universal Translator can translate spoken English into 26 languages

Computer giant Microsoft has reportedly created a software dubbed the " Universal Translator" that can convert English language spoken to it into 26 different languages.

Frank Soong and Rick Rashid -- from the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington -created the software which can also speak in the user's own voice, the Daily Mail reported.

The scientists hope that the software will one day allow visitors to foreign countries have conversations with other people, even though they do not speak the same language.

Soong said his breakthrough could help language students and might also work with navigational devices.

Hypothetically, it could be installed into a smart phone meaning tourists have a ready made translation device sitting in their pockets.
"We will be able to do quite a few scenario applications. For a monolingual speaker traveling in a foreign country, we'll do speech recognition followed by translation, followed by the final text to speech output in a different language, but still in his own voice," Soong said.

Soong and Rashid created the software with colleagues at the Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, the company's second-largest research lab.

The device needs around one hour to get used to a person's voice, and then works by comparing the words that have been recorded with stock models for the target language

Test Your Eyes online

They say that you should get your eyes checked every two years but if haven’t had the chance to see a doctor all this time, you can test your vision on your computer as well.
Of course these self eye tests are no substitute for visiting your doctor but if you follow the steps well, you may get some idea about how good (or bad) your vision is.

The Snellen Eye Chart

Most of us are familiar with the Snellen Chart that is made of rows of alphabets of different sizes – you read these letters from a distance, usually twenty feet, and the smallest row that you can recognize accurately indicates whether you have normal vision or not.
The various eye testing tools that are available online make use of the same Snellen chart.

Test your Eyesight Online

You should start with University at Buffalo’s IVAC tool. Use a physical ruler to measure the length of the line on the screen (the length will vary depending on your screen resolution). Also measure the distance of your eyes from the computer screen. Now read the row of letters on the screen and press ‘smaller’ to display more rows in decreasing sizes.
While performing the test, you need to cover one eye and when you have read all the characters from top-to-bottom, read them again but cover the other eye this time. When you can no longer read the letters, stop!
Another Flash based eye testing tool is hosted on thinkquest.org – this can work accurately only with computer monitors that are either 15”, 17” or 19” in size. Stand four feet from the screen and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the characters are no longer readable, hit the stop button and it will display your visual acuity.
Finally, if you are looking for more DIY solution, try this. Open the Snellen Chart image on your computer screen and measure the size of the big letter E using a ruler. Multiply that number by 2.838 and stand that far from the screen while taking the test. Now try reading the different letters, top to bottom, to check your vision.
