Some Tricks about your Operating System

Few tips for Windows 7 and OSX Lion that can save time and make you more productive

WINDOWS 7 ...

CREATE A WIRELESS HOTSPOT

With some free software, you can convert your Windows 7 laptop (or desktop with a Wi-Fi card) into a wireless router to share internet with others. Just get Connectify (www. connectify.me) or Virtual Router (http:// virtualrouter. codeplex.com) to enable this feature. Connectify and Virtual Router will not work on older editions of Windows.

VIRTUAL WINDOWS XP
There are several reasons why you would want to run Windows XP virtually within Windows 7. Maybe you have programs that only work in XP or maybe you're nostalgic. Whatever your reasons, you can download the necessary files from http://goo.gl/DCOSq.

WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER
Windows Media Center (built into Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions) offers more than just multimedia. It offers a 10 foot interface so that you can connect your PC to a TV and enjoy your content on a larger screen. Plus, it displays album art nicely and can stream all sorts of free content.

PLAY NICE WITH XBOX 360
If you have a Xbox 360 connected to the same network as your Windows 7 PC, you can use Windows Media Center (WMC) to stream photos, music and videos. On the Xbox, note down the 8-digit key from the WMC section in Apps. In WMC, click Tasks > Add Extender and enter the 8-digit key. Now you can access content on the Xbox.

LAUNCH APPS QUICKLY
Users of older editions of Windows probably don't know that with Windows 7, you can launch programs by just typing their name. Just click the Start button, start typing the name of the program you want to launch and the results will appear real time as you type. Just highlight the correct one and hit the enter button.

PLAY GOD FOR YOUR PC
There are various settings available for Windows 7, sometimes in various places (like control panel, personalisation, network settings menu and so on. With God Mode, you can have all settings in one place. Create a folder & name it GodMode. {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. More info at http://goo.gl/qdMFT.

THE PROBLEM STEPS RECORDER
Sometimes when something goes wrong with your PC, you could spend all day trying to figure out the problem. Instead, use the Problem Steps Recorder to record what's going wrong and send it to someone more knowledgeable for a quick diagnosis. Click the start button and type PSR to bring up the Problem Steps Recorder (psr.exe) — click on 'Start Record' and run through the problem again.

MAC OS X LION ...

GET THE DICTIONARY MEANING

If you want to get the dictionary meaning for a particular word, simply take the cursor over the word and double tap the trackpad using three fingers. The text will get highlighted in yellow and a pop up box will show you the dictionary definition and synonyms from the built in thesaurus.

SEARCH SPECIFIC FILE TYPES ONLY
While searching using the search box in Finder, type 'kind:' followed by the first alphabet of the file type you are searching for (example, type P for PDF or D for DOC). A drop down menu will show you a list of various file types to choose from. Select the file type you are looking for and then type in the name of the file to search.

REMOTELY WIPE DATA
If you have setup an iCloud account on OSX Lion, just by logging in to your account from another system, you can send a remote wipe command. This is useful to remotely wipe all the data from the hard drive in case of theft. Note that FileVault encryption service should be activated for this to work.

PREVIEW YOUR SEARCH RESULTS
When you search for anything in OS X Lion using the desktop Spotlight search icon in the top bar, you can get a preview of the search results. Simply move the pointer over one of the search results and it will show you a quick look panel with a preview of the particular file's contents. Note that this works with documents and images only.

LAUNCHPAD WALLPAPER STYLE
By default, LaunchPad displays the installed applications over a blurred image of your desktop wallpaper. If you don't like that look, then simply press 'Control + Option + Command + B' to switch between various background effect styles.

ADD DIGITAL SIGNATURES TO A PDF
Open a pdf file in the Preview application instead of Adobe Reader and press Shift + Command + A to bring up the annotations toolbar. Click on Signatures and select 'Create signature from iSight'. Now, sign on a blank piece of paper and hold it up in front of the webcam — it will save your signature digitally. Whenever you want to include your signature in a PDF, just select it from the toolbar and insert it on the page.

SECURE EMPTY TRASH
Hold the Command button on the keyboard and then alternate (right) click on the Trash icon on the icon dock. The pop up menu will display 'Secure Empty Trash' instead of just 'Empty trash'. The benefit of Secure Empty Trash is that the deleted files cannot be recovered by anyone using basic data recovery tools. Note that using the Secure Empty Trash feature takes more time to empty the trash than normal.

Programming Languages that Tech Entrepreneurs started with

Ever wonder where the biggest inventions started out, and by whom? Here is a list of programming languages, and frameworks that are behind some of the greatest technologies.

Facebook

Name of Developer: Mark Zuckerberg

Year:2004

Framework or Programing Language: PHP

This social networking site, which is the largest in the world, uses the PHP hypertext processor that is used for server-side scripting. Mark Zuckerberg wrote the site’s code and launched then named Thefacebook in 2004, when he was still a student at Harvard. His idea for Thefacebook came from his first attempt in late 2003, named Facemash. Facemash was later shut down by the universities’ administration.

LinkedIn

Name of Developer: Reid Hoffman

Year:2002

Framework or Programing Language: Java, C++

Reid Hoffman, an employee at Paypal left to start this social networking site and was joined by Chris Saccheri and Lee Hower. The front end of this site is built on Java, and C++ helps take care of a few of its in-memory caches. The site allows users to connect via a “gated-access approach” which requires professionals on the site to have a pre-existing relationship, or the intervention of a common contact to connect. The site meant for professionals became popular very quickly, as a result of its strictly vocational interests, and went public last year.

iOS

Name of Developer: Steve Jobs

Year: 2007

Framework or Programing Language: Mac OSX, Darwin OS

This smooth operating system is used on the iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices that have a touch-based interface. It is a derived operating system that is based on the Mac OSX. Both Mac OSX and the iOS have their roots in the Darwin operating system which was developed on UNIX predominantly by Apple, but also had contributions from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects.

Android

Name of Developer: Andy Rubin

Year: 2003

Framework or Programing Language: Linux

This OS which is popularly used on smartphones, and tablets, is a Linux-based system that was developed by Andy Rubin and Rich Miner along with Nick Sears and Chris White in 2003. Their vision, according to Rubin, was to develop “smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences”. Development for the OS is now undertaken by the Open Handset Alliance which is piloted by Google.

WiFi

Name of Developer: Vic Hayes

Year: 1999

Framework or Programing Language: IEEE 802.11 family

WiFi is the brand name used for products that comply with the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. Vic Hayes, who developed a number of primary standards within the IEEE is known as the “Father of WiFi”. Since 2000, the internet was made available anywhere and at anytime because of the widespread use of this technology. This mechanism which allowed devices to exchange data wirelessly changed the face of technology and allowed laptops to become more popular than even desktop computers.

Linux

Name of developer: Linus Torvalds

Year:1991

Framework or Programing Language:inspired by MINIX

This Unix-like OS was initiated by Linus Torvalds in an attempt to build a portable operating system that was similar to the MINIX system. Since the scope of the MINIX system was limited to educational use, Linus started working on the kernel of the Linux system in 1991, and has contributed to about 2 percent of the entire system. The Linux system is built on the free and open source software development model and Torvalds retains the rights to determine which properties are retained by the kernel. Linux is one of the most preferred operating systems in the world, with a number of super- computers running on it.

Ruby

Name of Developer: Yukihiro Matsumoto

Year: 1990’s

Framework or Programing Language: Inspired by Perl

This programming language, developed in the 1990’s by Yukihiro Matsumoto from Japan, was inspired by the Perl and Eiffel languages, and has a couple of features from the Smalltalk OOPs. The specifications of Ruby language are developed by the Open Standards Promotion Center of the Information-Technology Promotion Agency (in Japan). Matsumoto stated that he decided to create the language because of the need for a "...language that was more powerful than Perl, and more object-oriented than Python."

Apple Becomes World’s Second Most Valuable Brand — After Google [STUDY]

Apple‘s brand is worth $39.3 billion, or 33% more than it was at the start of the year, according to a study from consulting firm Brand Finance.
The London-based company looks at a company’s cash flow and other financial metrics to assess the worth of its trademarks and other intellectual property. At the top of the heap is Google, whose IP is worth $48.3 billion — and likely more after Thursday, when the search giant bought another treasure trove of patents from IBM. (Big Blue itself is currently in fourth place.)
Microsoft slipped to third place, a hair’s breadth below Apple at $39 billion — although Windows 8 may change that equation.
This marks the first time, according to the report, that the world’s top four most valuable brands are all tech companies. Coming in just below them: Walmart, GE, AT&T and Coca-Cola. A couple of banks with slipping reputations — Wells Fargo and Bank of America — round out the top 10.

Steve Jobs an Ultimate Lesson for Entrepreneurs:Forbes

Steve Job

May I add my voice to the chorus in praise of Steve Jobs?
Beyond brilliant, beyond insightful, beyond courageous, the man is a mass of contradictions, the combination of which, I believe, begins to explain his genius.
And, this genius provides a lesson of incredible power to every entrepreneur, or aspiring entrepreneur, on the planet.

Artist and engineer; Buddhist and hard-nosed businessman; visionary entrepreneur who has built large and resilient companies; optimist and pessimist; rugged individualist who appeals to the masses; prickly, difficult leader who inspires enormous loyalty among his troops; the ultimate opaque manager who has guarded his privacy and secrecy, even while providing the world with the tools of transparency.
It is this ability of Steve Jobs to hold completely disparate ideas and values in his mind at the same time, synthesize and then act upon them, that is one of the keys to his genius.
As F. Scott Fitzgerald is quoted as saying: “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”
And, Steve Jobs has not just functioned…his satori leaps of genius have redefined the technology landscape forever.
Of course, it is also Mr. Jobs’ ability to embrace such conflicting priorities that has bedeviled the competition. He has NOT been consistent, nor humble, nor predictable. One never knows what drummer he’ll be listening to at any given time, and this has made him a fearsome and successful competitor.
He has listened to his gut, and gone against conventional wisdom not as a habit, but when he felt it was right. His sensibilities and individual take on issues are all that was important.

They say, in brain research, that while the right and left sides of the brain hold different kinds of important skills and intelligence, it is the cerebral CORTEX — that which integrates both sides – that defines true intelligence.
If that is so then I believe Steve Jobs’ entire being is a cortex: he regularly integrates disparate knowledge, opinions, methods and actions to arrive at quantum leaps of genius.
It is the corporate manager who must be consistent, meet projections, squeeze out independent thought and innovation in the service of meeting company priorities.  The entrepreneur can go with his or her gut, can assimilate new ideas quickly and act on them, can bounce between conflicting priorities to come up with a new reality – thesis, antithesis, synthesis.
Now of course, one’s gut must be right.  Many have followed their independent certainty straight into oblivion.  But, that is a chance that entrepreneurs have accepted with their job… Steve Jobs epitomizes that entrepreneur’s genius. And, perhaps it is in understanding it, following his lead, yet at the same time rejecting it and doing the exact opposite, that just might lead us all to success
Topping my pile of books to read this weekend is one recommended to me called “The Opposable Mind: How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative Thinking” by Roger Martin.  I am hoping that it will begin to explain Mr. Jobs’ sequential entrepreneurial successes…and may provide a road map for we more minor players, who still have the will to achieve breakthrough innovation and success.
In the meantime, hats off to Steve Jobs: his entire career has been one marked by courage, independence, and brilliance.  May his last act embody the same qualities, and may he continue to lead the way for us all.

Cheaper Tablets for Aam Aadmi

When Mahendra Kumar Jain first thought of manufacturing a touch screen device four years ago, the word 'tablet' had only one meaning - it was something the doctor prescribed. He wanted to be in the infotainment device segment, and the touch screen seemed just the right device to make. However, by the time he unveiled his device in mid-August this year, an enormous change had occurred: the tablet had become the gadget of desire for the well-heeled. So much that in the April to June quarter Apple's iPad grew at 183 per cent year on year, while the global PC industry grew 2.6 per cent in volumes.
Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the period. India, the last of the major global markets to get the iPad, already has six to seven tablets on offer, including Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Research In Motion's PlayBook, apart from the iPad. Yet, Jain, Managing Director of Bangalorebased Laxmi Access Communications Systems, or LACS, fancies his chances of making a dent.
His cheapest tablet costs Rs 4,500, with the price rising up to Rs 36,000 for more costly versions.
The iPad costs Rs 28,000, the Galaxy Tab Rs 26,000 and the PlayBook Rs 27,000. LACS, which was so far into information technology distribution and manufacture of coated paper, is not the first Indian company to try and crack open this market by offering tablets cheap.
Reliance Communication has come out with its own at Rs 12,000 and Beetel, a Bharti company, has launched one for Rs 9,999. Around six months back, HCL Infosystems also came out with a range of India-made tablets, priced at Rs 12,000 onwards.
Will tablets follow the mobile handset pattern? Long dominated by multinationals like Nokia, Samsung and Motorola, and later raided by RIM's BlackBerry, Apple's iPhone, and various HTC models, this market was turned on its head by a clutch of Indian manufacturers who based their operations in countries like China and Taiwan, and pulled off a coup.
As the market share of the Indian manufacturers, led by Micromax, Lava and Spice, climbed from zero in 2008 to more than 20 per cent in 2010, market leader Nokia lost ground, with its share falling from 46 per cent to 35 per cent in the same period.
What gave Indian companies the edge was a rich list of features and long battery life for their products, and low prices. Should we brace for an encore in tablets? "The tablet market is clearly going the mobile handset way," says Naveen Mishra, lead telecom analyst at Cyber Media Research. He believes the market adoption of Indian tablets will speed up once Broadband Wireless Access takes off. Tablets are all about use of data on the move.
The tablet market is at 100,000 pieces a year and expected to grow at 35 per cent, say current estimates. "Beetel is trying to break the affordability barrier," says Vinod Sawhny, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Beetel Teletech. Jain of LACS is trying to do exactly the same, and more forcefully. He believes that many people in India aspire to owning a tablet - make it more affordable and they will come in droves. "At Rs 6,000-7,000, our products will have a much larger multiplier effect," says Jain. More so because he has tied up with finance companies, so customers can buy his tablet on a 12-month instalment scheme.
Sawhny and Jain both believe that there is a large untapped market in the rural and semiurban space. The lowering of the entry price, therefore, would be critical, as will be the world of applications that these companies can open up to the user.
They had better hurry, because Micromax and Lava are getting ready to launch their tablets, too.

The Interconnected World of Tech Companies

The “tech world” is really more of a “tech family.” Between digital giants’ appetites for acquisitions and the tendency of their ex-employees to start new companies, it’s easy to see how nearly every blip in the ecosystem is closely related.
We’ve mapped just a few of these family ties between “Xooglers,” the “PayPal Mafia”, “Softies” and the many other tech connectors who have yet to be nicknamed.
Our guess is that if you gathered a handful of tech veterans in a room, you could keep the tech connection game going forever. So while this graphic is hardly exhaustive, we’ll keep it going in the comments — feel free to add connections to the list!.

Apple Hires iPhone Hacker Nicholas Allegra(@Comex) from iPhone jailbreaking community

Apple has just hired yet another member of the iPhone jailbreaking community, Nicholas Allegra, also known as “@comex” on Twitter. Allegra is best known for the JailBreakMe website which made the process of jailbreaking the iPhone as simple as visiting a webpage using mobile Safari.

"JailbreakMe is the easiest way to free your device. Experience iOS as it could be, fully customizable, themeable, and with every tweak you could possibly imagine.

Safe and completely reversible (just restore in iTunes), jailbreaking gives you control over the device you own."

The 19-year old hacker from Chappaqua, New York, posted the news of his hire on Twitter, stating that he will be starting an internship with Apple week after next.

Allegra was one of the most visible members of the jailbreaking community, regularly finding security vulnerabilities in Apple’s iOS software, which made it possible to hack iPhones, iPod Touches and even iPads.

Typically, these holes were exploited through the use of specialized jailbreaking software applications which required the phone or other device to be connected to the computer via a USB cable.

But JailBreakMe was far easier to use – visitors just launched the website from their mobile device. The site featured a familiar-looking “slide to jailbreak” bar at the bottom of the page. One simple gesture, and the device was hacked. It made jailbreaking accessible to anyone, even non-technical users.

"Jailbreaking your device means installing a small program that removes restrictions in the default software. A jailbroken device can run apps and extensions (themes and tweaks) not approved by Apple. Jailbreaking does not slow down your device or use extra battery, and you can still use all your existing apps and buy new ones from the App Store. Jailbreaking simply enables you to do more with your device, nothing is taken away. "

Traditionally, Apple discouraged jailbreaking, as it allows for the installation of third-party applications outside the official iTunes App Store. The concern is that once a phone or other device is jailbroken, it’s easier to illegally pirate applications which would otherwise be sold in the App Store, earning revenue for developers and Apple alike.

However, not all jailbreakers are interested in stealing apps – sometimes, like their Android-rooting counterparts, they just want control over their handset. On jailbroken iOS devices, users can make tweaks to the software and install widgets, themes and other unapproved applications by way of third-party “jailbreak” app stores like Cydia, Icy and ThemeIt.

Nick on Facebook
In recent months, Apple has begun to take notice of the now-burgeoning jailbreak community, estimated to include 10% of all iPhones. For example, Apple hired Peter Hajas in June, the creator of a popular jailbreak app known as Mobile Notifier, which bears a striking resemblance to the new notification system in iOS5. The move prompted discussion as to whether Apple was reconsidering its position in regards to jailbreaking – maybe it’s now being thought of as a farm league for discovering new talent?

Jailbreaking is going even more mainstream this year, thanks to its first-ever hacker convention called MyGreatFest. According to event organizers, Allegra was planning on attending the conference, but whether he still will is now unclear.

Says MyGreatFest organizer Craig Fox, “I think it’s a great move for Allegra, but it’s sad for the jailbreaking community to lose such a bright and young hacker.”

This jailbreak was brought to you by comex, with the help of Grant Paul (chpwn), Jay Freeman (saurik), MuscleNerd, and many others. Please don't use this for piracy. Donate?

Apple's New CEO Tim Cook's email to his team

With Steve Jobs no longer at the helm of Apple, it’s up to new CEO Tim Cook to lead the company and its employees to greater heights.
Steve Jobs, co-founder and two-time CEO of Apple, offered his resignation to the company’s board Wednesday.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Cook, whose career at Apple has spanned more than 13 years, sent a message to the company to assure the troops that “Apple is not going to change” and that Jobs will continue to be involved as chairman of the company. Cook has been running the day-to-day operations of Apple since Jobs took a medical leave of absence in January; yesterday’s announcement just makes it official.
We have decided to post Cook’s four-paragraph email in its entirety below. Check it out, and let us know what you think of Cook’s message to the troops in the comments:

Tim Cook’s Email

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision I’ve ever made and it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steve’s optimism for Apple’s bright future.
Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve’s ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.
I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.
I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.
Tim

Tim Cook & Steve Jobs
Timothy D. "Tim" Cook (born November 1, 1960) is the CEO of Apple Inc., having joined the company in March 1998. His primary responsibility is managing day-to-day operations at the company. He was named CEO after Steve Jobs announced his resignation on August 24, 2011.

Career of Tim Cook
Cook spent six months at Compaq as VP for Corporate Materials before he was hired by Steve Jobs to join Apple. He initially served as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations.Prior to that, Cook served as the chief operating officer (COO) of the computer reseller division of Intelligent Electronics and spent 12 years in IBM's personal computer business as the director of North American Fulfillment.

Cook is credited with pulling Apple out of manufacturing by closing factories and warehouses around the world. This helped the company reduce inventory levels and streamline its supply chain, dramatically increasing margins. In January 2007, Cook was promoted to COO

Cook served as Apple CEO for two months in 2004, when Jobs was recovering from pancreatic cancer surgery. In 2009 Cook again served as Apple CEO for several months while Steve Jobs took a leave of absence for a liver transplant.

In January 2011, Apple's Board of Directors approved a third medical leave of absence, requested by Steve Jobs. During that time, Cook was responsible for most of Apple’s day-to-day operations while CEO Steve Jobs made most major decisions.Following the resignation of Jobs, Cook was made CEO of Apple Inc. on August 24, 2011.

Cook also serves on the board of directors of Nike.
